Tips for a hassle-free move

Blog

If you’re downsizing or moving into a retirement village like Evergreen in the near future, it’s a good idea to start planning ahead for the big day. Moving to a new home can be stressful, but we’ve compiled a few tips to help you take the hassle out of moving day.

1. Find a removal company

As soon as you know your moving date, start looking for a reputable removal company – it’s a good idea to book them well in advance of your move. You may want to get recommendations from friends and family members, and then get a few quotes before deciding on one that fits your budget.

2. Start packing up

Don’t leave your packing and decluttering to the last minute. Give yourself enough time to tackle each room and sort through your possessions – even if you start with just half an hour a day. If the packing-up process starts to feel overwhelming, ask a friend or family member to help you.

3. Make the most of the last few days in your home

Hopefully excitement has set in for your move to your new home, but don’t forget to enjoy the last few days in your current home. Moving is often an emotional experience, so give yourself the space and time to enjoy all the things you loved about your home and mentally prepare yourself to move on.

4. Take care of yourself

As nerves start to kick in ahead of the big day, you may find yourself dealing with some stress and anxiety. Try to stick to your normal routine as much as possible. Eat healthily, go to bed at the same time and practise some breathing exercises if you’re feeling tense. And if you get tired of being surrounded by boxes and packing material, take some time out of the house – visit friends, go for dinner or watch a movie.

5. Get organised for moving day

Pack a small box with your kettle, one or two mugs, some teabags and a few snacks that you can take to the new house yourself. Make a list of all your furniture and boxes and ensure that everything gets removed from your house on the day. If you’re moving alone, ask a family member to be at your new home to meet the removal truck and help co-ordinate things until you get there. Moving day can be chaotic, so it’s helpful to have someone there with you to provide a helping hand and some moral support. Once everything is finally placed in your new home, plug in the kettle, make a cup of tea, and give yourself some time to relax.
