The many benefits of water aerobics
Water aerobics is an ever-popular form of exercise amongst older adults, and with good reason. It’s kind on joints, strengthens and tones muscles and has a low risk of injury. So, if you love spending time in the water, this may be the workout for you.
Here’s a closer look at some the key benefits of this low-impact exercise.
1. It’s a good cardio workout
Water aerobics might look like a lot of fun – because it is – but it’s also quite challenging. As you do each of the movements, you’re working against the resistance of the water, and this helps to get your heart pumping. An added benefit is that you won’t get hot and sweaty while you work at getting your heart rate up.
2. Your joints will love it
If a bad back or dodgy knee is keeping you from power walking or running, water aerobics may be a good alternative. Your body is ‘supported’ by the water, which means there’s very little impact on your joints as you do the various exercises and movements – and as a result, there’s a very low risk of injury.
3. It strengthens and tones muscles
Your muscles get a workout as you go through the various movements, again thanks to the gentle resistance of the water. A standard water aerobics routine will typically include exercises to work each part of your body – including your core, which helps with posture and balance.
4. It’s relaxing
Working out in in a heated pool environment is relaxing and enjoyable. Not only will you benefit from the feel-good hormones that get released when you exercise, you’ll also get to enjoy working out in a fun and social group environment.
Ready to jump in? If you have a gym membership, find out about signing up for a trial class. Or if you’re an Evergreen resident, chat to your village manager to see whether water aerobics is offered on site.
Remember: It’s worth getting the all clear from your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.
