The importance of positive aging
Growing old is often only associated with physical and cognitive decline. But what about all the good things that lie ahead? All the positives that come from years of life experience? Recently, there’s been a move towards positive aging, an approach that rethinks the way society sees old age and places a strong focus on the positive aspects of it. Here are some of the ways you can get on board.
Change your perspective
Instead of buying into the stereotype that getting older is something to be feared, challenge yourself to see the aging process through a different lens: as something to look forward to. Because so many wonderful opportunities lie ahead – being able to spend every moment of every day as you like, finally having the time to travel to those places you were always too busy to visit, enjoying special time with your grandchildren, and being able to send them home at the end of a busy day! Maye Musk, mother of whizz kid entrepreneur Elon Musk, is someone who has embraced a positive approach to the aging process. In a January 2018 interview with Whowhatwear.com, she noted: “I’ll be 70 in April, and then I’m going to take off. I think my 70s are going to be amazing.”
Find your purpose
With your family all grown up and your career approaching (or already having come to) an end, you may find yourself wondering how to fill your days. Discovering your purpose in retirement is an important part of positive aging, so give some serious thought to what you’d like to dedicate your time to. Perhaps it’s your grandchildren? Or volunteering for a cause that’s close to your heart? While you’re figuring it out, remember that age has very little to do with how much you’re able to impact the world around you. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Graça Machel are just two noteworthy South Africans who’ve shown that old really is gold – and there’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t do the same.
Build your community
One of the most important ways to age positively is to be surrounded by a strong, supportive community. Evergreen Lifestyle Villages offers residents plenty of wonderful opportunities to connect in community. Our warm, welcoming Lifestyle Centres feature open-plan lounges, spacious communal areas and dedicated games rooms – perfect spaces to enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend or neighbour, join in regular card games, or get together around shared hobbies and interests. There are several clubs, societies and special interest groups that meet regularly and cover everything from books and bird-watching to walking and wine.
