Staying fit and flexible in lockdown
Given the weeks-long lockdown, it’s likely that many of us have fallen out of our exercise routines and are feeling a little less fit than before. But regular exercise is vital to good health – it can help to improve strength, flexibility, muscle tone, heart health and more – and it’s worth finding safe ways to stay active while adhering to the self-isolation and social distancing guidelines.
Here are a few options to consider.
(Remember that it’s always a good idea to chat to your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine.)
Yoga: This relaxing and energising discipline helps to improve flexibility, muscle tone and balance as well as reduce stress levels. If you’re looking for a calming routine, Yoga with Adriene offers this Slow and Gentle practice specifically for seniors.
Full-body workouts: If you’d like to do a workout that incorporates strength, cardio and flexibility exercises, have a look at these 10-minute routines by UK fitness trainer Joe Wicks (aka The Body Coach), which have been designed with seniors in mind: the 10-Minute Home Workout and the 10-Minute Chair Workout.
Stretching: Gentle stretching helps to ease tight muscles and improve flexibility – and it just feels good. Doing a few simple stretches and breathing exercises before bedtime can also help to calm your body and mind.
