How to plan for the perfect retirement #8 Loss of Dignity
The idea of becoming reliant on strangers for help with basic daily tasks and functions in later life can be a terrifying prospect. This is one of reasons that retirees often prefer to either move in with their children, or retire at home and have a family member look after them. We always advise our clients to be honest about the practicality of this arrangement – particularly if their children are working, tending to their own children, or financially constrained. Taking care of elderly parents with dementia or a disability takes specialised 24hour care, and can be both physically exhausting and emotionally challenging. This kind of care is probably better left to trained professionals, like those at Evergreen’s state-of-the-art health and frail-care centres.
