House or apartment: Where to live in retirement?

Blog

If you’re planning on moving into a retirement village, you may have the choice of a house or an apartment. So, which will work best for you? There’s no right or wrong answer and your decision will largely depend on your personal preference, circumstances and requirements. We’ve put together some questions to ask yourself to help make the decision a little easier.

1. Are you looking for a lock-up-and-go?

The good news is that managed retirement villages typically offer a high level of security, which means you can enjoy the benefits of lock-up-and-go living whether you opt for a house or an apartment.

2. How much living space do you need?

If you’re ready to downsize but still want to live in a stand-alone home with your partner – and have a bit of extra storage space – a house is probably the right choice. However, if you’re single and love the idea of a smaller space, an apartment may be the way to go.

3. What about a garden?

If you’re an avid gardener, love pottering outside or have a pet that you’d like to bring with you, a house seems like the obvious choice. But remember that even if you opt for an apartment, you’ll still be able to enjoy the maintained grounds and outdoor shared spaces of your village. And at Evergreen, even our ground-floor apartments are pet friendly.

4. How close do you want to be to your neighbours?

If you’d prefer not to share a wall with your neighbours, you’ll want to look at a stand-alone house. However, if you like the idea of having them close by, an apartment would work well for you.

5. What are your personal circumstances?

If you have some mobility challenges, a more contained apartment may be a better option – particularly one that has been designed to make it as easy as possible for you to move around and live comfortably.
