Why group exercise is good for you

Blog

We all know that keeping fit has a multitude of health benefits and that we should be exercising regularly – but it can be tough to get into a routine and stick to it. If you’re struggling to stay active on your own, group exercise might be the answer.

1. It’ll help keep you motivated

It’s pretty easy to skip a gym session if you’re not accountable to anyone but yourself. It’s a totally different story when you have your walking group or yoga instructor waiting for you. Knowing that your workout buddies are expecting you to show up is a great motivator, and chances are you’ll be much less likely to cancel at the last minute.

2. It’s fun and social

Unless you’re pretty disciplined, working out by yourself can seem like a chore. Group exercise, on the other hand, can be a fantastic way to have fun, connect with people and make new friends. And as anyone who’s ever been part of a running or walking club will tell you, there’s a great sense of camaraderie that develops when you sweat it out together.

3. You’ll have moral support

If you’re just starting out on your fitness journey, it can be intimidating to go it alone. But you don’t have to. Joining a regular class means that there’s a group of people who are doing it with you – and more often than not, you’ll encourage and support each other as you work towards your goals.

4. It’ll help keep stress in check

If you’re feeling a little frazzled, exercising in a group is a great outlet for stress and anxiety, and a wonderful way to lift your spirits. A study published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association in 2017 found that participants who exercised in a group had reduced stress levels and significantly improved quality of life compared to participants who worked out on their own.

Plan an active retirement

Thinking about settling down in a retirement village? Be sure to look for one that offers a range of well-maintained facilities, as well as social clubs and special-interest groups that will help you stay fit and active, and give you the opportunity to stay socially connected.
